This is a review for Tasting Beer: An Insider's Guide... by Randy Mosher.I purchased this book when I worked for a large macro-brewer in order to pass the Cicerone tests. This book is an absolute technical guide on how to understand and enjoy all kinds of beers. It has colorful commentary and excellent resources to help you understanding this delicious drink. For all you wondering about how hard the Cicerone Test is, I passed the Cicerone Beer Server test with flying colors. It is time based and multiple choice. Questions will bounce around from ingredients, process oriented, taste, smell, draft system technique, and situational. If you have the access to pre-tests, take the pre-test about 10 times. Just keeping doing it over and over and over again, you will see questions if not the same, VERY similiar and you will know how to answer them.Comment if you have any questions.

I love this book. There's tons of information about the science and quality of beers. It's a great introduction to the beer world. A little dry at some points, but it's been really helpful in educating me about which beers to try. If you really want to understand the different styles of beer, I would recommend drinking them while reading this book so you can notice the different flavors. For a beginner really interested in learning more, I would recommend purchasing a sample of each of the off-flavors as well, which this book discusses.

Randy Mosher, one of America’s foremost beer writers, has written 5 books on brewing and the enjoyment of beer. Tasting Beer is one of the better books written on the enjoyment of beer in a long time. He breezes through the history of beer – what it is and where it came from and then settles down to spend about a third of the book discussing sensory evaluation, the terminology of flavor, and how to evaluate beer. The next two chapters cover how to present beer and pair beer with food. Nearly half the book covers the most important beer styles. The book is well written and attractively illustrated. Anyone who wants to learn more about beer and its appreciation will enjoy this book.

I own both the hardcopy and the kindle version of the book, that's how good this book is. As a beer judge, brewer, and craft beer lover; I am always looking for information to help build that knowledge about beer and evaluation. This book is an easy to read, excellent starting point for anyone. It's a well rounded and excellent resource. If you dig this book and want to delve into the topics in this book a little more, this book is an excellent primer for the books Evaluating Beer and The Brewmaster's Table. Where this book leaves off on the evaluation of beer, Evaluating Beer picks up, and same goes for food and beer pairings between this book and the Brewmaster's table. This book is in my top 5 books that I feel every brewer should own.

I was inherently skeptical about the recommended reading for the entry level cicerone exam (Essentially a beer sommelier). Given that the only other option is you have to "buy" their practice materials for 200$ (I say "buy" because for 200$ you only have access to it for a couple of months...total scam) So, with no other option I opted for this book as a study source and I'm very glad I did. There are a couple chapters I skipped over, I have no interest in being a judge or competing, but it is still so chock full of other info I would recommend this to someone with even a casual interest in craft beer thanks to the author's engaging tone.

Awesome book. Every cicerone site recommends this book for a reason. Well written, easy to read, and very informative. If you are a beer nerd, or want to be, are starting to study for your certified beer server or cicerone this is the starting point. It doesn't read like a text book, it feels like you met someone super cool that knows a ton about beer and got to pick their brain.

Ive stopped loaning this book out. Every time I did the person ended up buying their own copy. Now I just tell everyone to buy their own. Fantastic book. Mosher does a great job presenting information in written and visual formats.

This is an excellent book that details the major types of beers that are available for the beer drinker who is willing to pursue something different, and tastier. After you read this book, you will probably get adventurous. I did. I went to a brew pub in Chicago, reviewed the available beers, and ordered a "Belgian Trippel" that they had on tap. It was excellent. I wouldn't have even known these existed, and definitely not what to expect when I drank one, if I hadn't read this book.I highly recommend this book.
