The title of this book lacks a question mark, but it needs one, because sociology professors Levin (The Violence of Hate, etc.) and Rabrenovic (Community Builders) ask far more questions in this hollow book than they answer. The project they have outlined, one made more immediate after September 11, is to understand hatred—and how that hatred so often leads to violence. Unfortunately, the project becomes mired in analytical quicksand. The problem is one of approach, and the authors include far too many isolated incidents and long-standing geopolitical disputes to offer a cohesive argument about, or prescriptions for, the admittedly complex nature of hatred. Rather than careening from instance to instance to diagnose the apparent pandemic of hatred (in the space of two pages, the authors move from Nazi Germany to violence against females in Uzbekistan and the anti-Semitic graffiti of disaffected youth), Levin and Rabrenovic would have done better to use fewer examples and offer more analysis to yield more valuable conclusions. Instead, they dance around the role in hatred of fear, revenge, evolutionary psychology and other factors. Also disappointing is the authors' tendency to oversimplify otherwise valid causes of hate and prescriptions for it with statements such as "[L]ike attracts like. When it comes to their peers, human beings seem almost universally to be predisposed to prefer being among people like themselves" and offer such advice as "Those who are victimized should seek help from the proper authorities, and they should act accordingly." Noble and worthy statements, but the authors' project proves unwieldy within the confines of this slim yet sadly inelegant volume.

About the Author
HUI LIU, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. Dr. Liu has published more than forty journal articles and holds eighteen awarded or pending patents. He founded Broadstorm Inc. in 2000 and developed the world's first OFDMA-based mobile broadband system. He is the author of Signal Processing Applications in CDMA Communications and is the General Chairman for the 2005 Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers.

GUOQING LI, PhD, is a Research Scientist in the Communication Technology Lab of Intel, where she works on broadband wireless technologies. Previously, Dr. Li worked as a senior system engineer at UTStarcom, developing algorithms for physical, multiple access control, radio link control, and radio resource control layers for 3G-WCDMA and IS-95 networks. Dr. Li has published more than twenty journal articles and conference papers.

About the Author

Ashley Messenger is Associate General Counsel for NPR, specializing in First Amendment and media law issues.  She has previously served as Editorial Counsel to U.S. News & World Report, a Fellow at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and a radio talk show host.  She has been practicing law for nearly 20 years, almost entirely in the field of media law.   She is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Communication at American University, where she has taught media law for graduate and undergraduate students since 2002.  She has also taught similar classes at George Washington University and George Mason University.  In the fall of 2013, she will be a visiting adjunct at the University of Michigan School of Law, teaching First Amendment law.   Professional honors and leadership roles include being a member of the Media Institute’s First Amendment Advisory Council; co-chair of the Media Law Resource Center’s Pre-Publication/Pre-Broadcast Review Committee; Vice Chair of the D.C. Bar Media Law Committee; and on the governing board of the ABA Forum on Communications Law.  She received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a J.D. from Pepperdine University.

Got an A in the class!

This book was required for my class, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The book itself is okay in terms of information, but it's riddled with typos, which I find unacceptable in any published book, but especially in college-level textbooks. Also, some of the legal terms aren't defined in the text, which was inconvenient because I often had to search for definitions in order to fully understand some concepts.

My fiancé and I like this book very much. It addresses issues that you wouldn't usually think about in preparation for marriage and we like how the book is also centered around God. We are Christians.

Really cute and useful when prepare with. A great tool to make you think of things you might not consider. The book was a good conversation starter . I have been in a relationship for three years, and the book brought up topics we had never considered before! Wish it had more Christian usage in it. Could use some bible verses.

Great book for couples planning on getting married. It deals with a lot of relevant topics that couples should discuss before marriage. We used this for pre-marital counseling sessions.

This has been a great book to keep us working toward our future marriage until we go to premarital counseling.

I would recommend to anyone whether you’re getting married in a year or soon! This book helped my wife and I grow closer and understand one another even more!

I recommend the whole package: the book, the workbook, the app and video components to any of the couples I get to do premarital counseling with and it has been an excellent resource for them and for me. Not only do these authors have great ability in talking about God's bigger picture for marriage, but they also have great skill in talking about marriage from a practical day-by-day perspective as well.
